Latest Golf News

The Working Bee Team at Mercury Bay have been working at fever pitch to get the new bridges ready for the 8th and 9th holes.  Thank you to all who generously donate their time and effort to the golf club cause!

We have a big week to get through as the girls had a lovely mini xmas on Wednesday, the Duxfield trophy is wrapped up and Jack Skinner had a record breaking performance last Saturday!

And for goodness sake don’t miss the Ham and Turkey Tournament this Sunday.  I’ve ordered plenty and I have big fat turkeys and beautiful hams to be won.  The question is… are you good enough?

MENS SCRAMBLE RESULTS

Saturday Scramble 12th November

Jack Skinner produced the round of the Year to take out the top honour in last weeks Saturday Scramble.  His net score of 54 was the top for the season and will be very hard to beat with only a few weeks to go.  Bob Pawson was a distant second with 45 points (ha ha, yes distant on 45!!) and if you didn’t score 43 points you were out of luck…

Wednesday Scramble 16th November

The ex-president must be enjoying his role at the club as… well nothing except for a loyal member, and his score on Wednesday was a testament to how nice it is to play without the presidential pressure.  His 44 was just in front of Duncan Hammond who visited the club just long enough to win a couple of beers and even Norm Ball got in on the winning action.  But wait who’s this also in 3rd??!  Ron Watson finally broke a run of sub 30 stableford rounds to explode back on the scene with 41 points!  Nice to have you back… Keep it up!

Well done also to Geoff Lowe who had 2 twos!  Nice!

DUXFIELD TROPHY FINAL

SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER

10.15am

GARY WHEELER & STEVE TULL

vs

KELLY BARSON & CRAIG OHLSON

The final of the Duxfield trophy has been played and the victorious pair of Gary Wheeler and Steve Tull were seen celebrating in the wee hours of… well Saturday afternoon…  But celebrate they did and no doubt they would have had to buy a couple of beers for poor old Kelly and Craig.

I say “Poor old” about those guys but I don’t really mean it.  Kelly and Craig had the easiest run to the finals in golfing history with only 1 of their Duxfield victories being played against 2 players!

I was at the champion of champions in the first round (Hayden Payne took them on) and Ron Anderson took them on in the Semi’s and only lost 1 down!

Anyway, they made the finals and went up against Steve and Wheels.  Steve is pretty green when it comes to big finals but Wheels…  Oh boy this is painful to do again, but I have to give credit where credit is due…

We only have 3 official club Matchplay events.  The Club Champs, the handicap Matchplay and the Duxfield trophy.  Wheels is the defending champion of the Duxfield trophy, a feat he achieved last year with the support of Kelvin O’Leary.  He now has defended this trophy along with the Club Champs junior Trophy.  He currently holds this years Handicap match play title and if he defends it in May he would have successfully won and defended every match play game he has had in 2 full years.

Somebody please stop this Madness!!

Gary Wheeler is the best match player in the Club… probably even the world.

…or maybe his handicap needs to be chopped.  Whatever it is May 2012 is a big month for all junior handicappers who are not Gary Wheeler!

Anyway it was all over on the 17th with Wheels once again dealing the killer blow.  Steve came in on a few holes but from what I can gather Wheels was all over it around the back nine.  The score was never far away from even around the front 9 but Craig and Kelly couldn’t keep up with the pace coming home.

Saturday Scramble 19th November

More great scores yesterday as a great field of 48 men turned up to play in the Saturday scramble.  Hardip Singh a new member from Auckland played wonderfully to score 44 points and take out the senior grade while Grant McKendry put all of the practice together to shoot a magnificent 46 stablefords.  The scores in the Junior division were far better than the Senior and finally the low handicappers had a reasonable chance to win a beer after a great call to split the grades.

There also was one other two on Saturday and that came from Peter May.  Why isn’t he on the normal list I hear you ask?  Well because Pete made his on the 1st hole after holing a shot from 120 metres out and picked up the eagles nest worth a cool $30.50
