Mercury Bay Golf News

The Golf Course is Perfect!

Today was one of the busiest days we have had this year and every single player who has come off the 18th has been raving about how great the course is.

So the message is this…  If you want to play your golf course at its very best, throw the clubs in the car and come down.  That’s all there is to it!  We have taken the placing off now so make sure you play the lie.  At least your back wont be sore from all the bending over!

This week we welcome new Mercury Bay Golf Members, preview the weekends Duxfield Trophy matches and we will also let you know which of the sexes reigns supreme!

Isn’t it great to have golf on in prime time!  I see Tiger is going well, its nice to have him back.  I may not like him but I must admit that I miss him being around!  He just makes golf so watchable!

And we have the presidents cup just around the corner!  It’s a great time to love golf!

CLUBS NZ

45TH NORTH ISLAND MENS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Three of our players representing the Mercury Bay Club took on the rest of New Zealand at Whangamata last weekend and finished a magnificent 2nd out of 64 in the club teams event.

The home team of Whangamata finish in top spot and our team of Bruce Bell, Mickey Henderson and Wayne Malcolm finished only 5 shots behind.  Bruce Bell was the stand out performer with two net scores in the mid 60’s.

MENS SCRAMBLE RESULTS

 Saturday Scramble 5th November

The fireworks came from Ian Millin on Saturday who celebrated Guy Fawkes with a scorching 46 Stableford points.  He sits proudly on the board for this months low net score and if you played on Wednesday and scored any less that 41 points then you can tell your story walking as you finished out of the money.

Yes- 40 points got nothing!!!… Brutal!

 DUXFIELD TROPHY 2011

Duxfield Semi Finals this weekend and here is how it’s gone down so far.

W Malcolm & B McLean      vs      G Wheeler & Steve Tull

Winners Gary Wheeler & Steve Tull    1up

R Watson & Ash Strachan    vs      G Wedge & T Coysh

Winners: Grant Wedge & Tom Coysh on 19th

Wheels and Steve are proving to be pretty strong and a net 62 from Wheels secured the victory on Wednesday.  They will go on to play Tom Coysh and Grant Wedge who have years of experience on their side… not to mention that both have been shooting awesome scores lately.

This will be a great game!

———————————————————————–

R Anderson & R Stewart       vs      M Burcombe & G Butler

Winners: Ron Anderson & Rod Stewart on the 15th

K Smith & A Havard              vs      C Ohlson & K Barson

Winners: Craig Ohlson and Kelly Barson on the 14th

Ron Anderson has been here all week and looks pretty fired up to take on Craig and Kelly who have been no doubt working and laying concrete and plastering and doing whatever they do during the week.  Rod Stewart has left Ron on his own for this match so this will be a very tall order if they want to make the final.  This will be the second match that Craig and Kelly will be taking on just 1 player.  They really have had a dream run to the finals, lets see if they can make it!

In other news Kevin Smith had 74 the other day, which was just one round late if he wanted to make the semi finals. Nice score though!

J & D TROPHY Men vs Women

It’s not easy being a man…  Not only do men have to deal with the fact that they don’t look as good as women, now all men have to accept the fact that women are better at golf too.  Wednesday’s J & D trophy was Golfs official battle of the sexes and once again the girls came out on top.

Not only that but they completely obliterated us.  It was a very sad day for mankind…

Twenty-five men and 28 women played in excellent conditions on a course good enough to play the lie. In teams of two men and two women they played for Stableford points, and the ten randomly chosen cards from each group were added together to find the winning side.

I was chosen to pick out the Womens cards while Jenny Layton chose the mens cards and it was pretty painful to watch as the women won by 49 points.  Yep, 49!  that means that the women outscored the men by 5 shots per card.  That is about as comprehensive as a victory can get.

In other news, Edith Thompson had the score of the year with 50 stableford points and to add insult to injury she added her 2 shots on to finish on 52 points.  A wonderful score and she sits proudly atop the yearly score leaderboard.

The Men didn’t have an eagles nest this time and of course Osman came in with a 3 up the 5th.  He is notorious for firing up at the wrong time and today was no exception.  I also eagled the 3rd on my way to 66 gross… (with a double up the 17th too… meh)  The course record will have to wait…

Daryll Gilliland topped the Mens leaderboard with a magnificent 45 stablefords and don’t be surprised to see him playing off a lower handicap in the next few weeks!
